Club Objectives

The purpose of this organization shall be:

  • To gather together gardeners for the study of horticulture;
  • To promote artistry in floral design and landscape design;
  • To aid in protection of all natural resources;
  • To encourage conservation practices in the home and community.

Our club programs, activities and projects have all been planned to further one or more of our objectives:

  • Every member participates in the Christmas Wreath making and our Civic Christmas Decorations workshops.
  • Every member participates in the Flower Mart.
  • Every member works on one or more of our other projects:
    • Monthly Young Gardeners meetings;
    • Monthly Garden Therapy meetings at the Nursing Home;
    • Landscaping around public buildings;
    • Clearing around and conserving historic sites;
    • Decorating a Christmas Tree for Hospice;
    • Directing school children in improving and beautifying their own environment.
  • Members are encouraged to bring an annual artistic arrangement to be judged.
  • Members are encouraged to bring at least one horticultural exhibit each year and orally share information about its growing habits in our county.

Our members want to learn from one another, share what they know, and work together to improve our community.

President’s Message

AThank you all for honoring me with the presidency of the Calvert Garden. I am excited to take on the job but quite intimidated at following all the wonderful presidents that have preceded me, particularly our past president, Adele Maguire. I know you all join me in thanking her for a job well done!
During her terms of office we published our first cookbook selling every
copy. Joined with the Chesapeake Garden Club, we hosted a wonderful House
and Garden Pilgrimage. I look forward to continuing this wonderful working
relationship. In addition, Adele gave us the push we needed to host our
first flower show in over 10 years! It was a resounding success but also great fun. I hope we all look forward to hosting a Standard Show in the near future. We won a National award for our Kitchen Garden at Linden and State awards for many projects. Best of all has been the camaraderie of the club itself. I’m thrilled hearing members say, “I love the Garden Club!”
Thanks, Adele, for a wonderful four years.

Now it is time for us to look forward. I have one special goal for the next two years. We need to work hard on building our membership. Without eager new members joining us, we will lose our vitality. It is crucial that each and every one of us takes the initiative to build our club. With good new blood comes the energy and new ideas to take us into the future.

Our program chairmen, Marty and Linda, have planned exciting and educational meetings for the next year including trips to Ladew Gardens and Gunston Hall, George Mason’s ancestral home. We’ll have a morning devoted to making our own hypertufas and become experts in making terrariums. In the fall we will be hostesses for the District II meeting and don’t forget, the Pilgrimage is coming up again in 2008! I hope each and every one of you will be able to participate.
